On September 11, 2023, the Bakersfield Police Department hosted a gathering with first responders and the community to honor those who lost their lives 23 years ago during the September 11 attacks. The event specifically recognized Flight Attendant Betty Ann Ong, who was the first person to alert authorities about the hijacking of American Airlines Flight 11, which was later crashed into the North Tower. A bench was unveiled and dedicated to Betty Ann outside Bakersfield Fire Station 15, highlighting her strong ties to the city. The event emphasized the bravery and perseverance displayed by many on that tragic day.
